Many of France's least well known wine producing regions are also among the oldest. Despite their high reputation since medieval times, areas like Franche-Comte and the Jura were decimated by phylloxera in the 19th century and never fully recovered. Now they are practically secrets, rarely discussed outside devoted coteries of wine lovers, and as such can offer a very difference experience of French wine to the classic appellations. Elsewhere, regions like Provence are moving away from their rich and distinctive whites and reds to satisfy the enormous demand for rose, whle regions like the Auvergne show a difference face of volcanic-grown gamay to Beaujolais.
