Dark beer is named after the heavily roasted malted barley used in the brewing process. Porter in particular was a British mainstay from the late 1770s onwards in London, and many expressions of the style can be found today. Dark Mild is generally considered a lower-alcohol porter whilst Milk Stout includes a small amount of lactose to add richer texture and a small amount of sweetness to the fuller bodied Stout profile.
