The Greek renaissance in wine has been spearheaded by a small number of talented, committed and well-travelled winemakers who have banished poor winemaking practices and applied modern techniques to indigenous grape varieties. As a result, Greece is one of the best countries anywhere in the world to look for characterful native grape varieties, many descended from the varieties that marked the ancient Greeks out as people of the vine. The two superstars are xinomavro in the red wines and assyrtiko in the white wines, but moschofilero, agiorgitiko and muscat are also full of flavour, if no easier to pronounce.
