The Loire river rises deep in the Ardeche, travelling north and then west to the Atlantic and practically all along its length vines are planted and wine is made. Signature whites from sauvignon blanc in Sancerre and Pouilly Fume have put the Loire region on the map of every UK wine lover, while the transparent, digestible whites of Muscadet offer terrific value. Chenin blanc reigns in the central Loire, with Vouvray, Montlouis and Saumur all providing their own slant on this mercurial grape. And, of course, cabernet franc from the Loire is some of the more delicious, moreish wine in the world, perfect lightly chilled with cold cuts, duck or a bavette steak.
