The scheduled dates for July-August are as follows:

Thursday 29th July – Sauvignonesque: The Art of Dry White Wine - £22.50

Hot, sunny days, humid evenings and sultry nights suggest limpid white wines of zing and zest chilled to thirst-quenching perfection. At the top of the list for many wine lovers will be Sauvignon Blanc, a grape that has seized the imagination of the wine world. Whether grown in its native Loire under its many guises such as Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé or Menetou-Salon to name a few, or around the world, especially in New Zealand where the flavours burst into Technicolor, Sauvignon is many people’s first choice of dry white. With this diversity of expressions as a starting point we will develop the theme of refreshment with great Vinho Verde, Verdejo and Vermentino.

Thursday 5th August- All Things Bright and Bubbly: Great Fizz- £25.00

‘Champagne makes you feel like it’s Sunday and better days are just around the corner." (Marlene Dietrich). At Theatre of Wine we couldn’t agree more and this tasting proves the point with a round of new Champagnes, such as Jean Milan’s great value Blanc de Blancs, the cutting edge Cava served at cult restaurant El Bulli, the best of Bulgaria with Miroglio’s Pinot Noir pink, and a biodynamic Vouvray from Pierre Breton presented au naturel.

Thursday 12th August – Austria and the Wines of the Danube – £27.00

Come cruise with us down the majestic Danube and share my recollections of a recent trip around the vineyards of Austria. Dramatic cliffs of primary rock are home to the noble vines of the Wachau and the wines of Franz Hirztberger especially highlight the outstanding potential here. In nearby Krems outcrops of limestone and slate give the wines of Schloss Gobelsburg and Stadt Krems a Burgundian richness. Moving across the borders of Hungary we discover the mysterious wines of Lake Balaton before plunging into the Black Sea with powerful reds from Bulgaria and the forward-thinking Zagreus winery.

Thursday 19th August – The Wines and Cheeses of the Alps - £30.00

Get some fresh air up in the rolling heights of the Alpine chain that stretches from eastern France, through Switzerland, and across the north of Italy to the border of Slovenia. These sunny pastures and steep slopes nourish both vine and pasture with equal generosity, and give rise to a cornucopia of wines and cheeses unequalled anywhere else. That the fruity flavour of mature Comte is a natural partner to local Pinot Noir, nutty Gruyere perfect with the rare Arvine grape, and crumbly sheep’s cheeses delightful with Pinot Blanc, are a testament to some of the finest food and wine pairings on earth.

Sunday 22nd August – Sherry and Tapas at the North Pole, Greenwich - £25.00 – 6pm – 9pm.

We will be taking over the elegant dining room of the North Pole in Greenwich for this fabulous celebration of Sherry and tapas in conjunction with the Sherry Institute of Jerez and William and Humberts Sherry. Imagine Spanish guitar music to set the mood, a procession of flavoursome mouthfuls like chorizo al vino and Manchego with quince, and a peacock’s tail of Sherry styles from delicate dry Fino and Manzanilla to rich and nutty Olrosos, and of course unctuous Pedro Ximenez. With tickets that have been subsidised by the Sherry promotional body we think this unbeatable value and unbeatable fun.

Thursday 26th August – Rosy Glow: The Last Pinks of Summer - £17.50

This has been the year of the rosé thanks to the glorious weather and it seems that this quintessentially summery style of wine has found favour with an ever larger audience. Often produced in such small quantities that they are rarely available year round, this tasting allows us to savour the last drops of wines now at their peak. We think the rosé selection this year has been one of our best, and you will be delighted to hear that they are all dry and expressive of their origins. Whether it is the unique Pinot Gris rosé of Reuilly, or the powerful blush of the Rhône, mineral Côtes de Provence or scented Moroccan gris de gris, this tasting will keep summer fresh for a little longer.
