Special Offers
Dear Lovers of Wine,A Homage to Catalonia
This month's offer is all about the wines of Catalonia in north-east Spain, justly regarded as some of the most exciting that Spain has to offer. Most famous is Priorat - dark, brooding, dramatic - but Montsant, Costers del Segre and Penedes, with their rich but (generally) softer feel, can offer exceptional quality too.
Yes, the wines are fantastic, but equally eye-catching are the prices. Discounts of up to 50% on previous prices have been made possible by a major spring clean at an importer we work closely with who offered sensational prices if we bought the lot. You won't find these wines at anywhere near these prices elsewhere.
All we ask is that you buy six bottles, mixed or otherwise.
Celler Capçanes, Montsant
The Capçanes co-operative, based in Montsant, has an extremely high reputation - Robert Parker has been known to give their wines 90+ points. The scale is small - a handful of growers provide the grapes and three qualified winemakers oversee the winery. Grenache (Garnacha in Spanish) is the mainstay of the reds, giving the wines a warm, hearty feel.
Mas Donis 2005, Montsant
Just a dash of Syrah gives dark fruit to the warmth of the grenache. The most rustic of the wines, with a characterful country feel, this would be great with a BBQ. Mas Donis normally sells at around £8. It is now on the shelves at £6 and is only £4.80 as part of the Winelover's offer! That's 40% off.
Lasendal 2007, Montsant
A similar blend but from some of the oldest vines and then aged in oak barrels. Rich, ripe, full, lovely in fact. Currently being offered elsewhere at £12, it is £9.90 on the shelf and £8.90 as part of a mixed six. That's over 25% off the going rate.
Costers del Gravet 2006, Montsant
The flagship blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and old-vine Carignan is a more structured, serious wine but still with the sun on its face. The last time we had this it was £17. The offer price is now £14.
Lo Givot, Priorat
A welcome, if limited, return for the lovely wines of Lo Givot in Priorat. Stocks are distinctly finite and this time there will be no return; once it's gone it really is gone.
Lo Givot 1999/2000, Priorat
Those of you who remember the wine from first time around will recognise its velvet texture, dark liqueur fruit and hint of ruggedness, reflecting the mineral-rich, slate soils of the region. These much sought after wines are made in tiny quantities and are never cheap. You can expect to pay well over £40 for the 2000, and around £30 for the 1999. The offer price is £16.00 when part of a mixed 6.
Allemany I Correio
This husband and wife team are talented oenologists and own a small vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot near to the town of Villafranca de Penedes. This is true garage winemaking of the highest order and the wines are listed at the cult restaurant El Bulli.
Sot Lefriec 2001
The 2001 vintage sealed the reputation of the estate and it has taken many years to come around. A recent bottle was very impressive with a saturated colour, aromas of ripe black fruit as well as wonderful scents of vanilla, toast and smoky coffee. A big wine it is nevertheless seductive and elegant. This wine was originally £40 and is now offered at half price, just £20 as part of a mixed 6.
